The Porch Light Promise
Every Halloween in our Florida neighborhood, the porch light doesn’t just mean candy — it means choices. Kids who stop by can pick a full-size candy bar and a book.
It started as a fun neighborhood tradition — sharing stories alongside sweets — but one October, I realized something was missing. I wanted to hand out a book of my own. That spark became Miles’ First Howl-o-ween, inspired by my puppy’s first big night of costumes, wagging tails, and candy wrappers.
That simple idea — to create something worth giving — grew into Ruby Quill Books, a home for stories filled with warmth, humor, and heart. Whether it’s a puppy’s first Christmas, a sleepy manatee, or a quiet note in a locker, every book begins with the same belief: stories are gifts meant to be shared.

If Ruby Quill Books Were a Kid...
Ruby Quill would be that kid who always has ink smudges on their fingers and a notebook full of half-finished ideas — doodles of dogs wearing capes, stories about sleepy manatees, poems written in the margins.
They’d be the one who brings an extra book to the park “just in case someone forgot theirs.” The kind of kid who saves the brightest crayon for a friend and believes every day deserves a story — even Tuesdays.
Ruby would talk a mile a minute about new ideas but listen quietly when someone else shares theirs. They’d collect seashells and stories with equal care, scribbling with a ruby-red pen that somehow never runs out of ink.
And when Halloween comes? Ruby would be out front with a grin, offering every trick-or-treater a full-size candy bar and a book — because in Ruby’s world, joy always comes in pairs.
